Mood Theme in a Year is a low-pressure community dedicated to creating a custom mood theme. Anyone is free to join or leave at any time, and make as many or as few mood theme graphics as they'd like. Sharing is encouraged, as is asking for help and cheering one another on.

Despite the name, there are three main schedules for this community:

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track, which begins on January 1st and continues through the year with regular breaks
  • The Minimum Mood Theme track, which starts seven times a year and goes for six weeks at a time
  • The Medium Mood Theme track, which starts three times a year and goes for fifteen weeks at a time, with one break in the middle

  • Mood prompt posting will begin on January 1st and continue through the year. The Maximum track will include all 132 moods; the Minimum Track will include the bare minimum 15 moods for a complete mood theme, plus an optional three moods that will give you the greatest image variety in your mood theme for the fewest actual images; the Medium Track includes all 34 higher-level moods that other moods inherit images from.

Roughly three of Dreamwidth's "moods" will be prompted each week for each track. The Maximum and Medium Tracks have a week-long break scheduled every seventh week. These breaks can be used to catch up on moods you missed, re-do moods you're not satisfied with, get a head start on future moods, work on uploading your custom mood theme, or really to just take a break. Rest is important too, after all!

Additionally, the prompted moods are just suggestions; you can work on the moods in any order you wish. While the order of all tracks is based on the mood hierarchy tree, starting with the mandatory moods and then moving on to the mid-level "branch" moods, participants are welcome to join in or leave at any time. Anyone looking for a particular challenge is welcome to check out the Mood Theme in a Month calendars, with a goal of completing at least one mood image per day to cover all of the Medium Moods! Or, if Bingo is more your style, here's a couple of Bingo cards to cover either all the Minimum Moods plus one, or most of the Medium Moods.

Interested in making a custom mood theme, but can't afford paid time at the moment? I've got great news for you: You can now earn paid time by making a custom mood theme! Find out the details over here.

For anyone who wants to get a head start, or just a better idea of what's to come, here's the various mood theme track schedules:

The Minimal Mood Theme Track starts and ends with each major Part of the Maximum Mood Theme Track:
  • January 1st through February 11th
  • February 19th through April 1st
  • April 9th through May 20th
  • May 28th through July 8th
  • July 16th through August 26th
  • September 3rd through October 14th
  • October 22nd through December 2nd

  • The Medium Mood Theme Tracks start on the first, third, and fifth major Part of the Maximum Track:
  • January 1st through April 1st
Break week February 19th through February 25th)
  • April 9th through July 8th
Break week May 21th through May 27th
  • July 16th through October 14th
Break week August 27th through September 2nd

  • The Maximum Mood Theme Track schedule is as follows:

Part One: January 1 through February 11: Mandatory moods (plus three) )

February 12 through Feb 18: First break! Take this time to refresh, relax, catch up on any moods you missed, or get a head start on future moods. This is also a good time to show off your progress; or, if you're satisfied with what you've come up with, this is also a decent stopping point; with these basic fifteen moods accounted for, all other moods will have an associated image.

Part Two: February 19 through April 1: Secondary and Tertiary Moods )

April 2 through April 8: Second break! Take another week off to relax, catch up, get ahead, or even stop here. You've got a good foundation for your mood theme, and are welcome to rejoin and pick it up again at any time!

Part Three: April 9 through May 20 )

May 21 through May 27: Third break! You know the drill by now.

Part Four: May 28 through July 8 )

July 9 through July 15: Fourth break

Part Five: July 16 through August 26 )

August 27 through September 2: Fifth break

Part Six: September 3 through October 14 )

October 15 through October 21: Sixth break

Part Seven: October 22 through December 2 )

December 3 through 9: Seventh break

Final Part: December 10 through December 23 )

December 24 through December 31: Final break! A fantastic time to show off everything you've done through the year, whether you found an early stopping point you were satisfied with, did only one or two moods a week at any given time, or made something for every single mood, now is a wonderful time to celebrate what you did. And for your mod to think about whether to do this again next year 😉

Important Note: On Leap Years, any date after February (aside from December 31st) should actually be one day earlier than listed above. This is because of February 29th and math shenanigans, and doesn't affect much aside from stealing one extra day off at the end of the year.

Remember that this is also only a suggested schedule. It's what the community will be officially posting, for anyone who wants to work on prompts as a group, but you can create the moods in any order you like, and stop or start whenever! The important part is to have fun while creating something you're satisfied with.

A very observant community member has noticed that Sympathetic isn't actually in the suggested schedule! A gross oversight to which I can only say: Oops 🤦‍♀️

I'm trying to figure out what to do about it; its rightful place in the hierarchy would be the first of the three moods in Week 6 of Part 6, so it's not like we've gotten to it in the schedule yet! While I would have to re-shuffle all of the moods in Parts 7 and 8, the only thing it would really throw off is the Bonus Moods at the end of Parts 3 through 7.

According to my math, I'm pretty sure that Sympathetic is the only mood I'm missing. I'm planning to go through sometime before Part 6 Week 6 and get all of the moods properly rearranged and organized, so everything's in the right place. To compensate for the extra mood floating around, this year I'm going to do double Bonus Moods at the end of Part 7; next year, I'll start Bonus Moods in Part 2, so we'll still cycle through all the moods from Part 8 mostly before December.

That said, everyone is still welcome to approach the schedule in whatever way works best for them. If you want to just use the schedule as it's currently posted (I'm too tired to change it tonight, I'll hopefully get to it in the next week or so) and slap Sympathetic on the end, take care of Sympathetic right this moment, or skip Sympathetic entirely, well, you'll have my sympathy 😜 However you go about it, what's important to me is that you enjoy the process!

And so the comm dawns on Part 6!

This week's Minimum moods are: Angry, Awake, Confused

This week's Medium moods are: Stressed, Excited, Optimistic

This week's Maximum moods are: Lethargic, Listless, Bored

Three very similar moods this week! If I had to characterize them, I think I'd differentiate them between the feelings around wanting to do something or not, and why. Lethargic seems like it doesn't want to do anything, even if it's currently doing something; it's just kinda done already. Listless wants to do something, but it's at loose ends for what. Bored may or may not be doing anything, but it's pretty sure it doesn't want to be doing what it's doing right now.

What do you think? Do you have different interpretations of these moods? And do you have ideas in mind for them already, or do you need a bit more help figuring them out? Some of each? However it is, let's talk about it!

Congratulations, everyone, we've made it to the fifth break week!

As usual, now's a great time to revisit moods you aren't quite satisfied with, get ahead on future moods, finish moods you've skipped, or even actually take a break.

There are two more full Parts left in the year, plus the extra short eighth Part (unless you've been following along with the bonus moods at the end of the third and later parts). That's only forty-one moods left; we're two-thirds done with the Maximum Track!

So do what you need to do this week, and I'll see you again next Thursday for the start of Part Six 👍

    Break for moods!

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Relaxed, Silly, Uncomfortable

This week's Maximum moods are: Blah, Apathetic, Blank

This Part's optional mood is: Busy

Some more tricky ones this week! Blank you can have a lot of fun with by literally leaving the whole space blank 😂 Or just the faces of your subjects, if you prefer! It strikes me as a very dot-eyes-plus-line-mouth neutral kind of mood, like 😐 Apathetic is similar, but like Complacent, it feels like it works best in conversation with something else happening in the background/around the subject that they just really don't care about. A "This may as well happen" kind of mood. Blah is all of those, with a side order of being just. Really worn-down and bored about it. Like, "Yeah, this might as well happen, but can it happen to end pretty soon, because it's getting tedious."

Those are just my impressions, though! What are your thoughts? Do you have a different interpretation of any of these? What's your approach on this week's moods? And do you need help with any of them? Let's talk about it!

    Moooooooood theeeeeeeeeme!

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Scared, Thoughtful, Working

This week's Maximum moods are: Touched, Dorky, Geeky

Touched is another kinda nebulous one, but one that has an easy out of taking it literally; I've talked before about how a literal interpretation of Touched is what got me into making mood themes in the first place, and I'll probably always love the idea of the subject of a mood theme literally being touched by someone or something else 😂 There's no reason you have to take it literally, though! If you're aiming for something more figurative, it probably leans closer to Grateful and Thankful, but maybe with more looking directly at who or what inspired that mood.

As for Dorky and Geeky, they've got a pretty similar flavor, both to each other and to Part 1's Nerdy. Between them, I'd say that Dorky is a bit sillier than the other two, while Nerdy is more intense, and Geeky falls somewhere in the middle.

Still, those are just my thoughts! What are yours? Do you have a different interpretation of this week's moods? And do you need help with any of them? Let's talk about it!

    Time for some more moods!

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Nerdy, Okay, Sad

This week's Maximum moods are: Weird, Shocked, Thankful

Weird has lots of fun potential, IMO, but can be hard to get just right; still, the efforts can be enjoyable! Shocked is great if you like visual puns; just aim for something electric! Thankful, meanwhile, is a little more ephemeral, and can be difficult to differentiate between it, Grateful and Satisfied. One possible approach is with a visible present; another might be a hug or a warm smile, maybe hand over heart.

Still, you may have other ideas, or maybe someone can help in the comments! What do you think? Have you got Thankful nailed, or do you need to talk it out more? What about this week's other moods; are you good to go, or would more brainstorming help? Either way, let's talk about it!

Dipping in a smidge early for these moods, but who's complaining? Hopefully nobody 😅

This weeks Minimum and Medium moods are: Enthralled, Happy, Indescribable

This week's Maximum moods are: Giggly, Naughty, Quixotic

Giggly and Naughty seem like pretty fun and easy-to-approach moods, but I'd honestly never come across the word Quixotic before LJ and Dreamwidth! As with the past two years, let's start with the definition that Dreamwidth links to:

    Quixotic

    [ kwik-sot-ik ]

    adjective

    1) extravagantly chivalrous or romantic; visionary, impractical, or impracticable.
    Synonyms: imaginary, fantastic, fanciful
    Antonyms: practical, realistic
    2) impulsive and often rashly unpredictable.
    3) (sometimes initial capital letter) resembling or befitting Don Quixote ( def ).

So if the subject of your mood theme ever tilts at windmills, this would be a good time to pull that out! Otherwise, aiming for generally quirky seems like a good approach for this tricky vocabulary word.

And while Giggly and Naughty seem relatively easy in comparison, that doesn't mean they will be. Hopefully you've got a good image or mental image of your subject(s) laughing that you didn't already use for Amused! As for Naughty, if anyone is particularly inclined towards practical jokes or other pranks, that may be the way to go there.

How about you? Do you think you're ready to tackle the challenge of Quixotic, or do you need some more pumping up first? Will Giggly and Naughty end up cutting you off at the pass, or are they easier foes to defeat than windmills with mistaken identities? And how is your mood theme going in general? Are you plugging along just fine, or could you use a bit more cheer leading? Whatever your needs are this week, let's talk about it!

It's a beautiful day for more moods!

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Determined, Devious, Energetic

This week's Maximum moods are: Ditzy, Flirty, Giddy

Ditzy is another one that's a little bit fraught, IMO; I lean towards a kind of Flirty-meets-Silly approach for it, but pretending it says "Dizzy" instead might also work! Flirty is flat-out fun as a mood to design. Winks and blown kisses are a great way to work with this one, as are little hearts. Giddy is a very Energetic sort of Happy, so pumped full of good feelings you can hardly contain it! A fun mood to work with, IMO.

But what do you think about this week's moods? Do you think that Flirty is as fun as I do? Or maybe you think that sort of mood is a pain? What about the other moods? Do you have any particularly strong opinions about the moods for this week? And are you set for inspiration, or do you need a bit of help? Let's talk about it!

Here's the fourth part of two mood themes - an Ojamajo Doremi theme I'm making as I go, and a Digimon theme I’m (heavily) polishing that I worked on for the last couple months of 2025. Both have borders, are 94x72, and have a few alternate mood image options apiece.

    The Ojamajo Doremi theme:
    - only features screencaps from the first season/series/51 episodes
    - is going to be made for Doremi fans in general, trying to give as many characters an appearance as possible and not favour anyone too much except in the sense of the main characters naturally showing up more than other characters

    The Digimon theme:
    - will feature images from 02 (+ Hurricane Touchdown + The Beginning), Tamers (+ Runaway Locomon), Frontier, and Appmon, also featuring some-but-less Adventure and Ghost Game - mostly screencaps, but also album and video covers, and maybe the occasional trading card or promo art
    - was made for me and focuses on characters I like
    - occasionally involves Wormmon, aka a cartoon bug. Just in case? (He does not appear in part 4)

    Both these themes:
    - should be assumed to contain spoilers through endgame for all involved canon material
    - can be used by anyone! Just please link back to any of my posts in this community in your profile or sticky post or some other public location. I’ll also edit in a compilation post (for each) link with all the images posted in one entry on my journal at the end of the year

And so we begin Part 5 at Mood Theme in a Year!

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Angry, Awake, Confused

This week's Maximum moods are: Full, Relieved, Crazy

Full seems like a reasonably easy one, especially if you're working from a canon that has food scenes. It pairs well with Hungry and Thirsty, really! Relieved, on the other hand, might need to be more context-heavy; I've relied on characters sighing and wiping away sweat, but depending on what you're working with, you may need to pull something from a near escape or a close shave. Crazy is... a complicated mood! Particularly politically. I tend to rely on tin hats and pinboards with articles and string, though spiral eyes are also a quick and easy go-to for this mood.

What do you think? Have you got this week's moods nailed down, or do you need to talk them over some? Do you, like me, have complicated feelings about some moods, and if so, how do you deal with them? And while I'm at it, how did your break go? Let's talk about it!
soc_puppet: A calendar page for January 2024 with emojis on various dates (Mood Theme in a Year)

And we've officially made it to the fourth break!

If you've been looking for a good spot to jump in and follow a schedule, next week would be perfect, as we're re-starting both the Minimum and Medium tracks. Otherwise, it's mostly business as usual.

Also, I promised by this point to have something figured out about premium paid time for original mood themes submitted to be Dreamwidth supported; while premium paid time itself is only offered in six and twelve month chunks, I'm going to be rewarding people in Dreamwidth points regardless, so I'll just do the math and send the equivalent number of points for anyone submitting fewer than 72 moods.

On that note, I've also officially been trained to upload new official, site-supported mood themes to Dreamwidth! So if you've got an original mood theme you've been sitting on and are thinking of submitting, now's a fantastic time to do that, as well. DM me or leave a comment on one of the posts here, and we can get started working on the details 👍

Other than that, it's just the usual break stuff: Catch up on missed moods or revisit any that you think need a touch-up, get ahead on future moods, or just take a break! Whatever you decide to do for the next week, I hope you enjoy it!

As television just reminded me, we're now officially half way through the year! That happens to mean that, with how the suggested schedule stacks up, we're also a little bit more than half-way through the Maximum Mood Track 👀

This week's Minimum moods are: Relaxed, Silly, Uncomfortable

This week's Medium moods are: Tired, Aggravated, Annoyed

This week's Maximum moods are: Recumbent, Complacent, Indifferent

This part's optional mood is: Artistic

Complacent and Indifferent seem like the tough ones this week, both in themselves and in differentiating from each other. Complacent is just kinda letting things happen, while Indifferent isn't really caring about things happening. Good moods for stuff going on in the background, I guess! Or maybe you came across some images or ideas in Annoyed that didn't quite fit the bill, because the main subject was just too chill about things. On the plus side, while I still don't think Recumbent is really a mood, it does seem pretty easy to manage for most mood theme subjects*! Just let them lay down for a while 😂

    * Exceptions can include things that float, because trying to figure out how to make a cloud lay down was one heck of a headache!

What are your thoughts on this week's moods? Have they got your creative juices flowing, or do you need a bit more of a metaphorical push? Do you think Recumbent really is a mood? And how is your mood theme going overall? Let's talk about it!

Here's the third part of two mood themes - an Ojamajo Doremi theme I'm making as I go, and a Digimon theme I’m (heavily) polishing that I worked on for the last couple months of 2025. Both have borders, are 94x72, and have a few alternate mood image options apiece. I meant to post this weeks ago oops.

    - was made for me and focuses on characters I like
    - occasionally involves Wormmon, aka a cartoon bug. Just in case? (He is a main mood image in part 3)

    Both these themes:
    - should be assumed to contain spoilers through endgame for all involved canon material
    - can be used by anyone! Just please link back to any of my posts in this community in your profile or sticky post or some other public location. I’ll also edit in a compilation post (for each) link with all the images posted in one entry in my journal at the end of the year

Ojamajo Doremi mood theme part 3 )

    Other parts: Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 4
    A. Digimon part 1 got one new mood image added under the alternates cut while I was working on part 3, B. Doremi part 1 and 2 each got two new mood images added under the alternates cut while I was working on part 3, C. and I have started editing in alt-text to the comm posts b/c... I am writing the alt text anyway. I should use it. Also this way it will be clear if I forget to set an image to visible-to-everyone Again.

Holy smokes, we're almost through Part 4 already!

This week's Minimum moods are: Scared, Thoughtful, Working

This week's Medium moods are: Exhausted, Sick, Content

This week's Maximum moods are: Calm, Mellow, Peaceful

Now here's a trial of similar moods! We've had some weeks before where two moods were pretty similar, but all three at once? That's a doozy! Let's try exploring the differences a bit.

The thing about Calm is that, unlike the other two, it has a pretty heavy implication of "in spite of". As in, in spite of all of the nonsense going on, your subject is Calm. Or, now that your subject has gotten a better grip on things, they're Calm. It's kinda reactive. Mellow, on the other hand, doesn't really care about what's going on. There might be some pharmaceuticals or other chemistry going on with Mellow, even, but it's hard to shake that mood's chill! Peaceful, meanwhile, has a bit more of a "for now" element to it; peace is hard to accomplish, and harder to defend! If you're Peaceful, you'd better take the time to relish it.

What do you think? Did my rambling help you narrow down some inspiration or image finding at all, or are you even more lost? Do you have different opinions on this week's moods? And how do you think you'll do with them? Let's talk about it!

I feel strangely on top of things this week; that only makes me wonder why Suspicious isn't an official mood...

This week's Minimum moods are: Nerdy, Okay, Sad

This week's Medium moods are: Satisfied, Mischievous, Exanimate

This week's Maximum moods are: Hopeful, Pleased, Rejuvenated

Of this week's moods, I feel like Rejuvenated might be the most difficult. (It's certainly the one I have the most difficulty spelling! Argh, I even spelled it wrong in the tags 🤦‍♀️ I should fix that...) With a word that means a return of youth or youthfulness, there aren't a lot of canons that you can necessarily draw literal options from here! Going with something that implies a return of energy may be the way to go. With luck, you'll have better options for Hopeful or Pleased. As for me, I featured a shooting star for Hopeful in both my Fancy Rats and clouds, since wishing on a star seems pretty hopeful to me; whereas pigeon Hopeful is staring at an ear of grain that someone might drop right in front of them perhaps maybe. Pleased, meanwhile, leans pretty close to Satisfied for me, maybe with a side of Thankful/Grateful, so if you've got extra options for those, this might be a good use for them.

What do you think? Do you actually have Rejuvenated locked down, both in mood and in spelling? What about the other moods? Do you need any help brainstorming? Or do you have things picked out and are ready to brag? Let's talk about it!

Slipping in a little early this week...

This week's Minimum moods are: Enthralled, Happy, Indescribable

This week's Medium moods are: Discontent, Gloomy, Anxious

This week's Maximum moods are: Impressed, Jubilant, Loved

Some more fun ones this week! And relatively straightforward as well, IMO. Impressed invites a sense of awe, if on a more approachable scale. Jubilant is celebrating loudly and enthusiastically, and Loved, well! Whether you go platonic, romantic, familial, or any other type of love, hopefully it's not too difficult to grasp.

What are your thoughts on this week's moods? Do you have absolutely the perfect plan for any of them? Or do you need to stretch a bit more to find an idea? Some of each? Let's talk about it!

Timing is always hectic for me on Thursdays. I'm looking forward to next year, when we'll be on a different day of the week here!

This week's Minimum moods are: Determined, Devious, Energetic

This week's Medium moods are: Refreshed, Surprised, Lazy

This week's Maximum moods are: Horny, Good, Grateful

And right off the bat, we've got a complicated mood to talk about! Since I want to keep this community open to all ages, if there's something 18+ -ish that you want to do with Horny, please either hide it under Details/Summary tags, or post it in your own journal and link it back in the comments. Otherwise, it should be good to go!

And now we get into talking about how to portray the mood itself! A picture of your subject with actual horns on for Horny is a pretty quick way to go about it, as well as if your source material has any scenes where your subject is in the mood. For my fancy rats, I took a cue from Japanese culture, and gave the rat in question a nosebleed; for my pigeons, I'm recreating a video where a pigeon is flirting hardcore with a very confused falcon. I skipped right over that mood in my clouds, though!

Good, on the other hand, is a bit more nebulous! I hear tell that some people like to lean into angelic theming, to contrast with the earlier Devious; there's also a common thumbs up sign as a useful signal. Grateful is more difficult still, especially when we'll have to contrast it with Thankful later on! A soft smile and a hand (or other appendage) over the heart can do well for this, as well as actually receiving something.

But maybe you have different ideas! What are your plans for this week's moods? Is something coming immediately to mind, or do you need some help with it? Do you have your ideas all lined up already? Planning to just skip one or more of this week's moods? That's valid as well! Whatever you decide, let's talk about it!

Welcome back for Part 4! Or wherever you might be on the list, be it just starting out or finishing up a mood theme from a previous attempt ✌ This week marks the first time that all three mood tracks have different moods! We'll be back to Minimum and Medium sharing moods in Part 5, then Part 6 will be the end of the final Medium run for this year. But enough babble from me; on to the moods!

This week's Minimum moods are: Angry, Awake, Confused

This week's Medium moods are: Stressed, Excited, Optimistic

This week's Maximum moods are: Chipper, Ecstatic, High

We've got some pretty bright and upbeat moods to start out this week! That said, while Ecstatic is a very enthusiastic and energetic sort of Happy, Chipper can be a bit difficult to distinguish from Cheerful. Perhaps a bit more perky? On the other hand, it's a great mood to work in puns on! For my fancy rats mood, the rat is chipping at a statue, whereas my still in progress pigeon mood has a pigeon sitting in an empty bag of chips (crisps). So if you're reaching for inspiration, don't be afraid to go with wordplay! Same thing with High; if you're working with a fandom or other source material where the green can be easily incorporated, you may already be covered, but for everyone else, being literally, physically high in the air might be an option. My High cloud (coming in the next code push!) is floating over the top of a skyscraper, while my High pigeon is itself looking down on a cloud! Playing with perspective might be another option here.

What are your thoughts on this week's moods? Think you'll have an easy time of it, or do you expect to struggle a bit? And how about the new category of moods we've entered, now that we've moved away from Angry a bit? Does that affect your actual mood at all? Let's talk about it!

Okay, I don't feel bad about almost missing the Break Week update. That seems like an okay thing to almost miss here. Plus I only almost missed it this time, which is worth something in my book! I promise, barring extremely unlikely circumstances, I will never be too late to post on Thursday because of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ever again.

Anyway, break week! A good time to catch up on moods you missed, get ahead on moods you think you'll have trouble with (or are just looking forward to that much), or to just plain... take a break! What are your plans for this week? Let's talk about it! Or don't; we can take a break from that, too 😉

Here we are, the final week of Part 3! Next week is a break week (phew!), and then we reach the first time this year that all three tracks have different moods.

This week's Minimum and Medium moods are: Relaxed, Silly, Uncomfortable

This week's Maximum moods are: Hyper, Amused, Cheerful

I almost forgot to do this, but! As usual, for anyone who's taking the Maximum track and wants to skip December, I'm adding an optional mood to the sixth week of this and the next four parts (total of five optional moods). Anyone who's working on that track and takes the optional moods will be able to skip the last two weeks of the schedule!

This Part's optional mood is: Accomplished

As you can see, we've moved on from Angry derivatives and onto branches of Happy. We'll be sticking with those for a while in the next Part as well. And...

Okay, I'm going to be honest with you. I'm wrung out today and don't have a lot of brain power to do my usual mood-themed chitchat in the main post 😅 But maybe you have some thoughts on this week's moods you'd like to share in the comments? Are you having any trouble with these? Did you get an idea right away for one or more of them? Do you want to talk some of them out, to tease out extra meaning so you can find or create the perfect graphic? Let's talk about it!
